Day 2. Workshop at Sanskriti Kendra

Beautiful warm sunny morning. Geoff and I walked around the whole complex and saw peacocks, parakeets and sculptures. After a delicious breakfast Pollie had arranged for 3 potters from Tamil Nadu to demonstrate their special skills - handbuilding large animals and figures - they had personally made most of the large scale traditional sculptures around the site.
On site also is a comprehensive terracotta museum showing the differing styles from around India. Our cameras were red hot. We all tried our hand at some traditional designs of small animals, but the main focus of the day was after lunch when the 3 potters started showing us how they handbuild elephants. Our afternoon was spent watching true masters at work. Early evening we ventured out via hair raising taxi to a cinema/ mall complex about 20 minutes drive away. The group split - some went to the cinema to see Slum-Dog Millionaire, some went to improve their sartorial elegance, the search was on for beer and Nigel Edmondson was last seen foraging the supermarket shelves for marmalade. The ladies failed to shop till they dropped but Nigel Harrison came up trumps. He was lured in by a fancy new waistcoat that beckoned from the window, but also succumbed to a velvet jacket - the height of Bollywood splendour - who would have guessed that the group shopaholic would be a man! - more of his bargains later. Willy topped off the evening by falling down a large hole in the road and gashing his arm quite badly, but luckily he always travels with his personal nurse so he's OK. The taxi drive home in the dark was especially scary. How long do you have to be in India before you become acclimatised to this?
